Historical Background

The "villa Beau-Rivage" was built at the end of the 19th century and was the property of Madeleine Lemaire, a well-known water colour painter. In her studio, situated in the "rue Monceau" in Paris, she gathered every week artists and members of the fashionable society of the time, and her poetry and music evenings were very popular with the "Tout Paris".

At these sessions, young musicians were thus given an opportunity to perform in front of a selected audience. During the summer, Madeleine Lemaire moved to her "château" at Réveillon or her villa in Dieppe, where she consorted with the fashionable society staying in their villas on the sea front or higher up on the cliffs.

She would also invite friends and artists, and Marcel Proust spent the month of August 1895 there with the young composer Reynaldo Hahn. Around that time Hahn set to music the "Portraits de peintres" by Proust, and Proust published  "Les plaisirs et les jours" with watercolours by Madeleine Lemaire.
